Synopsis
"I blast the stereo in a vain attempt to drown out my thoughts. I don’t want to be thinking about him and analyzing every detail of first period. It makes me feel like a young, foolish girl, and I’m embarrassed that I can’t control the way my body reacts every time his eyes meet mine."

In a quiet town in the East Valley of Phoenix, Arizona, everything in life is seemingly perfect for eighteen-year-old Kaley Kennedy. She has loving parents, loyal friends, and is dating the hottest boy in school. With only a few months left of her senior year, she’s looking forward to an epic summer before heading off to Los Angeles for college.

Without warning, a gorgeous new math teacher interrupts Kaley’s predictable little world, challenging who she is. Suddenly, parties, dates, and Friday nights with her friends seem empty and unfulfilling as she finds herself obsessing over his every move. Desperate for something more, but determined to ignore her fierce attraction, every single relationship in her life begins to crumble by forces beyond her control. Struggling to transition from adolescence to adulthood, Kaley must choose between playing it safe or risking more than just her heart. . . .

Excerpt
I do the entire problem over three times before finally summoning the courage to raise my hand. What I wouldn’t give to be enrolled in an all-girls Catholic school right now, so I could actually focus on learning math instead of being intimidated to raise my hand because of my teacher’s insane good looks. He’s working with another student when he notices my hand in the air and gives me a quick nod to let me know he’ll be there in a minute. My palms moisten, and I wipe them down on my jeans, scolding myself for being such an idiotic school girl with uncontrollable urges.

So pathetic.

“My calculator’s messed up,” I say as he approaches my desk.

“Let me take a look at it.”

I hand it to him with swift obedience. “I swear I entered everything correctly.”

“I can figure it out,” he says. “I can work these things forward and backward.”

My stomach swirls as he squats down next to me, pressing a combination of buttons and pulling up screens I’ve never seen before. I peer over his shoulder in amazement. This man can work a TI-84 graphing calculator like nobody’s business. Am I seriously finding this sexy? I’ve just reached a new low.

“Okay, your settings were off, but I also think you entered a number in wrong somewhere.”

“I checked three times,” I say, annoyed.

He smirks. “It’s a machine; it can’t make a mistake. It can only do what you tell it to.” He places it in front of me and stands. “Is it updated?” he asks, picking it up again. I have no idea what he means, and I think he can tell with the way he smiles at me. “I’ll check it for you.”

He walks over to his desk and plugs it into his computer. I didn’t even know you could do that. I observe him as another student comes up to his desk and asks a question. His self-assurance is so alluring. High school boys seem to overcompensate for their lack of confidence, coming off as arrogant. But Mr. Slate is older, more mature. He never crosses the fine line that divides confidence and arrogance. And even though I try to fight it, I’m finding myself drawn to him like a hummingbird thirsty for nectar. He makes me want to be more mature, sexy, and assertive.

He makes me want to be a woman.

“Here you go, Kaley,” he says, dissolving my thoughts. He sets my calculator on my desk, his chestnut eyes gleaming into mine. “Let me know if you need anything else.”

Oh, help me.

Excerpt

“So, about why you came…”
“I came to say a goodbye, of sorts.”
Her heart stuttered, but hopefully she
managed to keep her face blank.
“Goodbye?”
“That’s right. I’m not coming back next semester.”
“You’ve taken another teaching job?”
“No,” he said, slipping his hands in his pockets. “Teaching
has been wonderful, but I always planned to return to Whitcomb Enterprises in
Los Angeles. My father will be retiring soon. Plus, the company’s expanding
into airplane parts manufacturing plants and my environmental science expertise
is going to be critical in that expansion.”
“I see,” she said, looking down at her hands, folded on her
desk. “So, when are you leaving?”
“I leave tomorrow in order to start the ball rolling, but I
won’t officially be in the swing of things for a few weeks.”
He left tomorrow.
She hadn’t seen him much since they’d broken up. Only here
and there. And she’d been so angry before. It had only been a few weeks since
they’d been able to be civil to one another again. Now he’d be gone from her
life. Forever?
She was more shaken by the news than she wanted to admit.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
She swallowed, forcing a shrug. “Of course. I wish you well,
Jamie.”
“I may be leaving the university, but we’ve still got
Vegas.”
“Of course.”
“I’m attending a bachelor party while I’m there—one of my
college friends is marrying my sister—and then I’ll be at the wedding.”
“That’s right. Brianne. And Eric?”
His jaw clenched. “That’s right.”
“So the wedding is in L.A.?”
“Coronado Island.”
The well-to-do place where he grew up. Lucy had been there
once. It was a beautiful beach resort town that managed to seem casual even as
it reeked of old money.
“Yes, well…I’m sure it’ll be a grand affair.” She rose from
her seated position behind the desk, and to prove to him and to herself how
over him she was, she came around to where he was and reached out to give him a
hug. “See you in Vegas.”
He wrapped his arms around her waist.
His shoulders were as strong and broad and taut as she
remembered them. His scent as woodsy. His breath as soft on her neck as he held
her tight, returning the embrace. Tingles shot through her stomach. God, what
this man could do to her. Sexual chemistry had never been their problem.
A little overwhelmed by being in bodily contact with a man
her body still seemed to desire, she pulled back, intent on ending the hug. But
when she tried to pull away, Jamie kept his arms around her waist.
“Do you need something else?” she asked, now eye-to-eye with
him.
“Yes.”
For a moment, time hung suspended, and it seemed as though
Lucy could see every fleck of gold in Jamie’s eyes, could feel every pound of
his heartbeat, could breathe in the essence of him…and then he
cupped her face
and kissed her, even as he wound the hair at the sides of her face up in his
fingers and tugged. Lucy felt herself melt into him and a moan escaped her
lips. As they parted of their own free will, he slipped his tongue inside her
mouth and sought hers out.
God, it was so
good to kiss him. To have him touch her again. Lucy could hardly breathe. She
was dizzy and she felt like she might very well black out.
She opened her
eyes and he was staring into hers with an intense smoldering look that made her
want to take him right there on the desk. Instead, she forced herself to take a
step back.
“Bye, Luce. Take care of yourself, okay?”

“You, too,” she said simply. Because what else was there to
say?

Excerpt

“I think right now the one thing you need to do is sleep, darlin’.”  He nuzzled her neck, pressing his lips where it curved into her shoulder.  “It’s late and you never look like you sleep as well as you should.  Tomorrow is soon enough for you to worry about how somebody else’s tragedy has to ruin your life.”

“It’s already ruined mine.”  Slowly, she turned around and lifted her hands, curling them in the soft, worn material of his shirt, pressing her head against his chest.  The smell of him flooded her head.  Warm man, something spicy—the soap he wore or aftershave—she liked it.  Rubbing her cheek against him, she murmured, “It’s ruined my life for years and I’m tired of it.  I don’t want to let it ruin my life anymore.  That’s why I’m trying to figure out what to do next.”

“I already told you.  Sleep.”  He rubbed his lips against hers and then said quietly, a thread of steel in his voice, “Tomorrow, we find answers.  For now, though…”

He slid his hands down her back, cupped them around her hips.  He boosted her up and when she twined her legs around him, it was a sweet, sweet bliss.  “Maybe the answer to that is think about you.  You’ve lived your life day by day, always thinking about keeping your secrets.  We need to figure out how you can reclaim your life, but you can’t do that in the dead of night.  So for now…think about you.  What you need.”

He dipped his head and caught her lower lip between his, bit her lightly.

“What do you need?”

A slow shudder wracked her body and he decided he liked it.  As he lifted his head to peer down into her eyes, she stared up at him, her eyes cloudy and heated.  “Are you suggesting that maybe the answer to this lies in getting naked?”

It’s now six o’clock and I’m sitting down to try to get
ahead on a little work for an author friend of mine that wants me to help her
come up with some graphics. I just get my program pulled up when the doorbell
rings.
I walk out of my office, turn and head to the door. I look
out the peephole and see Chief Cole standing there. I immediately duck down,
because everyone knows that cops can see through those little holes. It’s some
kind of special tactical training they have to go through at the academy.
I, ever… so… quietly, walk backwards down the hall. Then
there is a pounding at the door (you know the one I’m talking about. Cop Move
2. The three quick pounds on the door that are able to wake the dead.). I
freeze and don’t breathe for a moment. Just in case.
“Ree! Open the damn door!” he says, sounding
exasperated.
I continue my mission impossible escape back into my office.
My desk faces the front windows, so I covertly move to the side that has the
string to close the blinds. I plaster my back against the wall and, slowly,
pull on the string. The blinds are on the opposite side from the string, and
they are almost all the way to me when a face appears on the other side of the
glass next to me.
“Aaaaeeee!” I scream out, hands flailing, ducking down and
throwing my hands over my head.
“Ree,” he says seriously; his voice muffled through the
glass, “Open the damn door.”
I lift my head and look up at him through the window, “No.”
I’m pretty proud of the fact that my voice comes out strong and defiant,
despite the fact that I totally freaked out.
“Ree.”
“No!” I stand up and put my hands on my hips. “You can’t
make me.” I grab the string and close the blinds the rest of the way, then go
back to my desk, sit down and decide to get back to work.
Except it’s kind of hard, knowing he’s just on the other
side of the window…
Nope. Back to work.
I bring up a couple pictures and begin to manipulate them. I
push away all thoughts of Chief Panty Melter and begin to work diligently. I
look at the clock on my computer, after what feels like an hour, and realize
it’s only been two minutes. I look back at my double monitors; I haven’t done
anything other than stare at the pictures. I can’t freaking concentrate!
Fuck it!
I get up and walk over to the window. I pull the blinds
apart and deftly look out.
Hmm.
He’s not there.
I open them further and look all around my front yard. There
is no trace of him.
Damn.
I mean, good. Yeah. It’s good news.
“Looking for something?”
“What the fuck!” I scream, spinning around, my hand flying
to my chest. Chief Panty Melter is leaning against the wall, arms crossed,
smiling at me. “How the hell did you get in here?!” I demand.
He tilts his head back, “Back door was unlocked,” he answers.
“So, you… you just came right in?” I demand, my voice a
little weak. Dammit.
“Well,” he raises his brows, looks down at himself and the
fact that he is very much in my house, then looks back up at me, “yeah.”
“That’s a B&E and you’re a cop!”
“And?”
 “And?” I jerk my head
back. “And?” I demand, getting closer
to him and in his face, “You can’t just
break into someone’s house
!” I screech, stomping my feet and holding my
fists tight to my sides, arms straight.
He moves quick. Really
quick. One second, I’m in his face yelling, the next he has my back against the
wall, his body holding mine in place and his hands resting against the wall on
either side of my head.
His eyes roam over my face with an intensity I don’t
recognize.
“Fuck,” he says quietly. “Has anyone ever told you how
unbelievably sexy you are when you’re mad?”
I blink.
I blink again.
One more time.
Did I just hear him right?
“What?” I breathe out in shock.
“Baby, I’ve never been more turned on than I am at this exact
fucking moment.”

MeetTheAuthor
My first book, Darkness Deserved, released July of 2013. It is the first book in the Shattering the Darkness Series.

I'm crazy and love my friends, family and booze.

I used to never read when I was growing up. My mother always tried to get me to read and I wanted no part in it. I figured why read when it's going to be a movie? (Yes, like I said crazy.)

Well a few years ago I jumped on the Twilight band wagon. I've always loved supernatural movies and when I saw the previews I knew I wanted to see it. And see it I did. I immediately went out and bought the books and became hooked.

They came to me at a very special time in my life.

I discovered I loved to read and found my nitch in the paranormal and romance genre. I started a book club with a cousin and all of a sudden these thoughts kept assaulting my brain.

So I wrote them down. Then, deciding that I wanted to write, I contacted some wonderfully amazing women who helped me through the process.

I now have three books under my belt and am still learning constantly.

My Life Series, is by far my favorite to write. There are some events in the story that are based on actual events that have happened in my life.

I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed living them.
